Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dark Fibre?

A basic explanation of Dark Fibre is a long piece of fibre optic cable that goes from point-to- point.
The reason it’s called dark is because it has nothing on each end and no light is going through it. This
gives you full control over the equipment you install. It’s basically a big long patch lead.

What is Managed Fibre?

Managed Fibre unlike Dark Fibre has carriers or Services providers equipment on each end of it. It
can have monitoring tools and redundant paths. It’s a full turn key solution so if any part of the link
breaks you service provider will be fixing it immediately or replacing any hardware in the event of a
failure.

What is a NOC

NOC stands for Network Operations Centre. These are usually manned 24×7 monitoring your

What does VLL mean?

Virtual Leased Lines (VLL) is a way to provide Ethernet-based point to point communication over
IP/MPLS networks.
The term Virtual Leased Line is also used to describe a point to point bonded connection using the
Broadband Bonding technology. This implementation is bonded in layer 4.
In the industry, the technology is also referred to as Virtual Private Wire Service (VPWS) or EoMPLS
(Ethernet over MPLS).
VLL uses the pseudo-wire encapsulation for transporting Ethernet traffic over an MPLS tunnel across
an IP/MPLS backbone.

What does a Multiplexer do?

Multiplexers are used to increase the bandwidth capacity of your Dark Fibre. Instead of having one
connection a multiplexer allows you to multiple connections over the fibre. For the passive devices,
we supply you are able to get 88 x 10GiG links over a pair of fibres spanning 80KM’s
